Drew Groves returns for his 5th year in the University of Connecticut
Marching Band (UCMB) as the Head Drum Major. Previously, Drew spent 4
years in the saxophone section, two as a section leader. Prior to
attending UConn, Drew was a proud member of Bolton High School's Concert
Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Sax Octet, serving in leadership
positions in all of them.
Currently, Drew is a Music Education Major working towards a BA in Music
in the School of Fine Arts, and a BS in Education in the NEAG School of
Education. He is a member of both the UConn Wind Ensemble and the
undergraduate chamber group the "Odd Meter Saxophone Quartet." He was
honored to be featured with the quartet in the piece Urban Requiem,
performed by the Wind Ensemble in late Fall 2008. In addition, Drew has
been a member of the UConn Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble, and is a
member of the UConn Pep Bands, having been privileged to travel to
Pennsylvania and California with the women's baskeBand Fieldll team. Finally, in
Spring 2008, Drew was fortunate to have the opportunity to study in
Florence, Italy for the semester, gaining valuable life experiences and a
fresh perspective on society.
Jim Moriarty, Drum Major
Jim Moriarty returns for a fourth year in the UCMB after spending 3 years
as a member of the trumpet section. He has played in the pep band and jazz
lab band while at the University of Connecticut and was a featured soloist
for the marching band in 2008. Jim had no prior marching experience before
attending UConn. He is from East Longmeadow, MA, and in high school he was
selected to the Massachusetts All-State band for his junior and senior
year and was the brass captain and trumpet section leader for 2 years. He
managed and conducted a pit band for a student run talent show in high
school and is the President and founder of the East Longmeadow Community
Band.
Outside of music, Jim is one of 24 students in the University Scholars
program where he has created a unique curriculum combining Civil
Engineering with Ecology and environmental systems to focus on sustainable
design. His University Scholar project involves assessing the mixed-use
Storrs Center design for its environmental integration of water and energy
systems. He has completed a separate 110 page honors thesis on
‘Ecologically Sustainable Building Design’ where he created a design to
renovate a 108 year old community building in Wilbraham, MA using green
building strategies. Jim is a Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) Accredited Professional, one of only 200 students in the
country, and is the co-chair of the Connecticut Emerging Green Builders.
He regularly attends regional and international green building conferences
and is a member of many professional organizations including NESEA,
ASHRAE, ASCE, and Tau Beta Pi (national engineering honors society).
Brendon Foley, Drum Major
Brendon (his friends call him Foley) is a seventh semester music major from Rockville, CT. In his time at Rockville, Brendon marched for four years and in his senior season served as Drum Major for the Marching Ram Band. At UConn Brendon has played with the Pep Band, which recently accompanied the Lady Huskies to St. Louis for the 2009 National Championship, he has also preformed with the Concert Band on tuba and sat principal trombone in the Symphonic Band in the Fall of 2008. Brendon is the bass trombonist for the University Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra and over the summer plays with The Glastonbury Towne Band. This past season has been Brendon’s third in the UCMB where he served as Trombone Section Leader and featured soloist in Santana’s Smooth/Yaleo. Brendon aspires to march with a DCI Corps. This upcoming Summer and is pursuing a career in Music Education.
Brendon is a Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Fraternity for College Bandmembers, and has been chapter Alumni Liaison and is currently the chapter’s Historian.
Brendon enjoys candle lit dinners and long evening walks on the beach (and Band Field). WACCA WACCA!
